### Reasons Why Indian Students Opt for Higher Education in the United States

The United States stands out as a highly desirable destination for international students, particularly Indians, who seek a rich educational experience. According to a recent Open Doors Report, there has been a 12 percent increase in the population of international students in the US for the academic year 2022-2023. Notably, Indian student enrollment in the US reached a record high during this period, showing a remarkable 35 percent year-on-year growth, totaling 268,923 students. This trend underscores the escalating preference for quality education overseas among Indian students.

1. VARIETY OF PROGRAMS AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The educational landscape in the US offers Indian students access to a wide array of courses across more than 5000 esteemed institutions, providing opportunities to pursue undergraduate and Ph.D. programs in various disciplines. Recent years have witnessed a surge in international student enrollment in STEM fields, business, and management programs certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. Popular choices among Indian students include Computer Science and IT specializations like AI, data science, and cybersecurity, as well as Engineering disciplines such as electrical, aerospace, mechanical, and civil engineering. Additionally, MBA specializations in international business, finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship are highly sought after. Degrees in biophysics, genetic engineering, and bioinformatics are also gaining popularity. Furthermore, programs that enable students to commence their first year of studies at a US university in India are gaining traction.

2. CAREER PROSPECTS

The US offers promising career prospects for international students, attracting 32 percent of Indian students to choose it as their preferred study destination. Many universities and colleges in the US provide opportunities for students to engage in internships, fostering connections with leading employers and paving the way for lucrative job offers in the future. Careers projected to witness substantial growth over the next seven years include software developer, information security analyst, medical and health services manager, web developer, and financial manager.

3. STUDENT-FRIENDLY POLICIES

Recent initiatives in the US have introduced favorable policies for graduates in STEM fields, allowing them to apply for work permits for up to two years post-graduation. This extension provides Indian students with an enhanced timeframe to explore employment opportunities and manage their student loans effectively. International students are categorized as non-immigrants under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, making them eligible for various visas, including the F-1 visa.

4. SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Numerous US universities offer scholarship programs that enable aspiring students to pursue higher education in their preferred institutions. Additionally, platforms providing education loans facilitate access to financial aid, making it feasible for students to study in the US.

5. CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE

The US, often referred to as a ‘nation of immigrants,’ embraces a diverse tapestry of cultures, values, and traditions, fostering an inclusive environment for international students. This cultural amalgamation facilitates a smooth adjustment for Indian students, allowing them to concentrate on their academic pursuits. The US’s reputation for offering a blend of academic flexibility, career opportunities, and student-friendly visa policies continues to enhance its appeal as a favored study destination for Indian students.

As the US implements more student-centric policies and endeavors to streamline visa processes, the influx of students enrolling in US universities is expected to rise further in 2024.
