Last month, the crème de la crème of Broadway united for the 10th annual 2024 Shubert Foundation High School Theatre Festival. Over 100 talented young theatre artists from NYC public schools graced the stage of the Winter Garden Theatre for the first time. This special event commemorated six exceptional high school student productions from the 2023-24 academic year, carefully chosen by professional theatre artists and educators from a pool of over 20 productions citywide.

The Shubert High School Theatre Festival not only showcases the outstanding theatrical endeavors happening in NYC public high schools but also underscores the vital skills cultivated through theatre studies, both on stage and in life. These skills include collaboration, artistry, discipline, focus, literacy, student voice, self-awareness, presence, and empathy. The evening emphasized the profound impact of a dedicated theatre program on students and school communities, encouraging students to consider theatre and the arts as potential career paths.

“It’s crucial to introduce theatre into New York City schools,” expressed the host [ppp1] on the red carpet. “It offers children a chance to delve into something beyond their daily experiences, potentially sparking a creative interest for the future. Moreover, it fosters imagination and broadens horizons!”

“Theatre has been my outlet for expression,” shared the two-time Tony nominee [ppp2]. “Today, we gather to show our support for the passion that young individuals harbor for theatre and performance.”
