At universities in both the United States and the United Kingdom, students must reside in on-campus housing for a specified period, typically a year or two. Ohio University and Swansea University share various advantages and disadvantages regarding housing arrangements.
After five weeks of my study abroad program, here are my observations on accommodations:
Observation on Communal Living Spaces
Communal living spaces are more actively utilized in Swansea compared to Athens. Swansea’s dormitories feature shared kitchens on each floor, fostering interactions among students. In contrast, most dorms in Athens lack kitchens, resulting in underutilization. Despite occasional inconveniences, such as overcrowded fridges and freezers, shared kitchen facilities have facilitated social connections with fellow floor mates.
Comparison of Housing Options and Transportation
Swansea University offers limited on-campus housing options, unlike Ohio University, which provides a more diverse selection. This limitation poses challenges for international students, particularly in terms of transportation between the university’s Singleton and Bay campuses. The distance between Bay Campus and Singleton Campus necessitates additional time allocation for commuting, impacting students’ schedules and social activities.
Affordability and Dining Facilities
Swansea University’s accommodation fees differ significantly from those of U.S. universities. For instance, students residing in a twin en-suite room at Bay Campus pay a different rate compared to those in a standard double room at Athens. The absence of dining halls at Swansea University further complicates matters, as students are restricted to meal plans for specific dormitories, limiting dining options on campus.
Social Environment and Friendliness
Floormates at Swansea University exhibit a notably friendly demeanor, engaging in daily conversations and displaying genuine concern for each other’s well-being. This welcoming atmosphere fosters camaraderie among international students, creating a more inclusive environment conducive to forming friendships and social connections.
Overall, the experiences with on-campus accommodations at Ohio University and Swansea University highlight the distinct advantages and challenges associated with university housing in different cultural and geographical contexts.
