On Friday, March 1, authorities in Merseyside and across the UK commenced the distribution of offers to students for enrollment in secondary schools starting in the summer of 2024. Families in the region are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to compare the schools they have been allocated with local and national competitors.
The top-performing secondary schools in Merseyside, as well as nationwide, for the year 2024 have been assessed, compiled, and positioned in the Sunday Times’ Parent Power Guide. These rankings are based on critical criteria such as examination outcomes and Ofsted evaluations.
The educational institutions are evaluated based on their academic achievements, considering GCSE results, as well as A-level outcomes for schools and colleges that provide this qualification.
The percentage of 9, 8, 7, A*, and A grades achieved in GCSE exams is computed in relation to the total number of GCSE entries. This calculation includes IGCSEs taken in independent schools, with A-level results carrying double weightage. The Parent Power rankings incorporate the most recent Ofsted assessments.
Among the best in the UK, eight secondary schools in Merseyside made it to the final shortlist, with their national rankings ranging from 25th to 358th. This represents a decrease from the 13 schools that held top positions in 2023, including institutions like Wirral Grammar School for Boys, St Anselm’s College, Greenbank High School, Tower College, Range High School, King David High School, and St Edward’s College, which have now dropped out of the rankings.
As the National Offer Day and appeals process with the relevant Local Education Authority draw to a close, many families will be preparing to send their children off to secondary school this September. To assist families in making informed decisions, we have compiled a list of the top schools in the region.
