Senior Elizabeth Ruvalcaba, an International Business major, seized the chance to participate in a study abroad program at Yonsei University in South Korea during the fall of 2023. Supported by her family, friends, and faculty at EKU, Ruvalcaba excelled in her South Korean venture.
Many students aspire to study abroad, anticipating a deeper understanding of their field through diverse learning encounters. As an honors student at EKU, Ruvalcaba leverages her status as a motivation for success.
Expressing her long-standing desire to explore different countries and immerse herself in diverse cultures, Ruvalcaba viewed this opportunity as a perfect fit. She highlighted the unique educational structure and cultural milieu of South Korea, emphasizing the contrast from the U.S.
Ruvalcaba marveled at the cleanliness and accessibility of transportation in South Korea, along with the affordability of food—a notable aspect of her experience. Moreover, she appreciated the robust safety measures, which alleviated any concerns about her surroundings.
Despite the enriching experience, Ruvalcaba grappled with the emotional challenge of being far from her loved ones, especially considering her close bond with her immigrant parents. The absence of familiar faces in a foreign land heightened her sense of isolation.
Academically, Ruvalcaba encountered rigorous coursework, particularly intensive group presentations and exams. The academic intensity and cultural expectations in South Korea posed significant challenges compared to her familiar academic environment.
David Coleman, the Executive Director of EKU’s Honors Program, played a pivotal role in supporting Ruvalcaba throughout her journey. Acknowledging her passion for Korean culture, Coleman provided encouragement and guidance, fostering Ruvalcaba’s academic and personal growth.
Reflecting on the transformative power of studying abroad, Coleman emphasized the profound impact on one’s mindset, professional opportunities, and cultural awareness. He shared his own experience of studying in Spain, underscoring the lasting influence of such immersive experiences.
