### Transformative Study Abroad Experience for EKU Students

Through participation in study abroad programs, Jasmine Gaona, a nursing major at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), had the chance to shadow the Red Cross and assist patients in Mexico. Meanwhile, Charles Kokinda, a Richmond native and music major, delved into learning the German language. Dustin Tucker, a first-generation student majoring in business management, immersed himself in exploring World War II history across Europe. Additionally, Nomi Smith, a studio art major, delved into studying artwork and philosophies in Japan, gaining a fresh perspective on global society.

EKU offers a variety of program options to enrich students’ educational experiences abroad, coupled with numerous scholarship opportunities to ensure affordability and accessibility. These include the EKU Education Abroad Scholarship, Spin the Wheel Scholarship, and Honors Trailblazer Award.

President David McFaddin emphasized EKU’s commitment to providing transformative international learning experiences for students from diverse financial backgrounds. The university’s impact extends beyond the local and national levels, resonating globally.

Kokinda, recipient of the Spin the Wheel Scholarship, shared his enriching experience studying in Germany, highlighting the interactive language learning activities that immersed him in the local culture.

The annual Spin the Wheel event at EKU awarded scholarships to 19 students for comprehensive program coverage and airfare for overseas education in 2024. Moreover, the Honors Trailblazer Award, supporting honors students in study-abroad programs, recently granted scholarships to 20 deserving recipients for spring or summer 2024, with enhanced funding for those studying in East Asia.

Smith’s exploration of Japanese culture was made possible by the Trailblazer Award, enabling her to delve into the dynamics of cultural exchange and its role in fostering peace and understanding.

Generous endowment gifts, notably from Mr. Li Chunbo, have paved the way for initiatives like the Trailblazer Awards, fostering global connections and enabling EKU students to partake in enriching study-abroad experiences.

Reflecting on his time in Germany, Tucker expressed gratitude for the support received through the Honors Trailblazer Award, which facilitated his exploration of the country’s rich history and culture.

Students engaged in study abroad not only pursue academic endeavors but also immerse themselves in the local environment, enhancing language skills and cultural appreciation. Gaona highlighted the significance of her experience in Mexico, emphasizing the personal and professional growth it fostered.

The students’ overseas experiences have left a lasting impact, broadening their perspectives and fostering gratitude for the opportunities afforded by EKU. Gaona, Tucker, and their peers cherish the memories and lessons gained from their international sojourns, underscoring the profound value of global education facilitated by EKU’s Education Abroad programs.
