A total of 210 GREAT Scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year are being provided by 71 UK universities to students hailing from 15 different countries.

These scholarships cater to individuals with a keen interest in pursuing postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom (UK). This academic year (2024-25) witnesses 210 scholarships being extended by 71 UK universities to students representing 15 countries.

Each scholarship is valued at a minimum of £10,000, designated to cover tuition fees for a one-year postgraduate program. Eligible candidates from various countries such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, and others are eligible to apply for these scholarships, with the selected postgraduate courses typically commencing in September.

These scholarships are jointly funded by the UK government’s GREAT Britain Campaign and the British Council, in collaboration with participating UK higher education institutions. The GREAT campaign, an initiative by the UK government, plays a pivotal role in fostering educational opportunities between India and the UK. It not only aids in job creation but also fosters learning and growth among international visitors, students, traders, investors, residents, and professionals.

In an exclusive interview, Rittika Chanda Parruck MBE, Director of Education India at the British Council, delves into the details of the GREAT Scholarship, its application process, and the valuable insights provided by the British Council regarding scholarship opportunities.

Significance of the GREAT Scholarship for Indian students planning to pursue studies in the UK

The GREAT Scholarships present students worldwide, including those from India, with the chance to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK. This year, 25 UK universities are offering 26 postgraduate GREAT scholarships specifically for Indian students. These scholarships encompass a wide array of fields such as Finance, Marketing, Business, Psychology, Design, Humanities, Dance, and more. Each scholarship, valued at a minimum of £10,000, is allocated towards tuition fees for one-year postgraduate programs in the UK starting from autumn 2024.

Furthermore, the GREAT Scholarships program for 2024 includes two scholarships tailored for Indian students focusing on Justice and Law studies, in collaboration with the Ministry for Justice. These scholarships are available at two renowned higher education institutions known for their exceptional legal programs.

Additionally, for the academic year 2024-25, there are four Science and Technology scholarships offered across four UK Universities. Indian students are encouraged to apply for courses covering a diverse range of science and technology-related subjects, including artificial intelligence, sustainable engineering, psychology, and more, at any of the participating higher education institutions.

Basic eligibility criteria

While the criteria may vary among institutions, the common requirements include the student being an Indian passport holder to establish permanent residence, holding an undergraduate degree, and meeting the academic and English language prerequisites of the UK university.

Prospective scholarship applicants must have received an offer of admission from one of the participating universities and must fulfill all entry requirements for the chosen course as specified by the respective university.

Submission deadline

The submission deadlines vary across universities, with most universities setting the application deadline between the end of April and the end of May 2024, with possible extensions until June in certain cases. Shortlisted applicants may be required to participate in a video interview with the university’s selection committee. Successful scholars will be notified of the outcome post the application submission process by the individual universities.

Application process details

Aspiring applicants can initiate the process by visiting the provided website to gather comprehensive information about the available scholarships. Applicants should apply for individual scholarships by adhering to the specific instructions outlined on each university’s scholarship webpage. As part of the application procedure, students may need to submit an essay. Some universities might request a 500-word essay on a previously studied topic and why it piqued their interest. This essay forms part of the shortlisting criteria, alongside academic achievements and potential displayed.

Upon confirmation of selection, scholarship funds will be disbursed to successful scholars by the individual universities following the registration process. Timely completion of any mandatory registration procedures is crucial to access the scholarship funds.

While the British Council does not directly assist in application filing, it conducts online sessions via Facebook Live in collaboration with university teams to offer valuable insights into scholarship opportunities. Prospective applicants are encouraged to explore the Study UK website for a plethora of tailored resources and tips aimed at aiding in securing scholarships. Additionally, previous scholars share their firsthand experiences generously and provide guidance on effective strategies.

Apart from these sessions, the British Council’s Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) managed by global teams provide further opportunities for skill development and knowledge enhancement in an online format. The British Council also provides pre-departure briefings to students selected for academic courses in the UK, covering essential topics such as travel arrangements, visa applications, accommodation options, and student life in the UK.
