Alyssa Carson, a doctoral student, harbors a deep desire to journey into space and unveil its mysteries. Gradually crafting her profile as a potential astronaut, she is currently pursuing her doctoral studies at the University of Arkansas, focusing on enhancing her expertise in astrobiology.
Since her fascination was ignited at the tender age of five, she has amassed a substantial following on social media and actively participated in various NASA space camps. In the latest episode of Short Takes, Carson delves into her odyssey and aspirations of delving into the realm of cosmos.
Expressing her passion, she articulates, “I believe it is imperative for us to persist in exploring and expanding our knowledge of space. I aspire to contribute to this endeavor in any capacity possible.”
Hailing from Louisiana, Carson obtained her bachelor’s degree in astrobiology from Florida Tech. During her quest for a suitable graduate program, she was advised to prioritize institutions based on their research focus, especially areas aligning with her interests. Intrigued by the astrobiology research initiatives at the University of Arkansas, she reached out to Tim Kral, a distinguished professor in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Collaborating with Professor Kral as a doctoral researcher, Carson’s work revolves around Mars, investigating the survivability and growth potential of certain bacteria in the Martian atmosphere.
Elaborating on their methodologies, she elucidates, “The testing techniques we are developing have broader applications beyond Mars exploration. The concept of extraterrestrial life has always captivated us – its plausibility and implications.”
Upon completing her doctoral program, Carson intends to monitor opportunities within NASA’s astronaut selection process. With her expertise in astrobiology, she envisions herself as a formidable contender for the coveted role.
