Securing admission to a renowned international university marks a significant achievement for countless students. A pivotal aspect of this journey involves excelling in a widely recognized assessment. The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), administered by ETS, stands as a crucial exam for individuals aspiring to pursue advanced studies in countries such as the United States, UK, Canada, Australia, and other prominent overseas education hubs. This assessment holds substantial weight as it is widely accepted by leading graduate and professional institutions offering programs in STEM, law, humanities, and management.
Remarkably, more than 1,300 business schools across 72 countries acknowledge GRE scores for admission into their MBA programs. Moreover, numerous specialized master’s and doctoral programs in business also consider these scores. Notably, several top Indian business schools, including the Indian School of Business, IIMs, and other leading institutions, accept GRE scores as well.
In September 2023, the GRE underwent significant changes to enhance the overall experience for test-takers. One of the key modifications was the reduction of the test duration to just under two hours, down from the previous four hours. This adjustment not only increased convenience for test-takers but also positioned the GRE as the shortest assessment for graduate and professional program admissions.
Another enhancement introduced during this period was the reduction of score reporting time from 10-15 calendar days to 8-10 calendar days. This expedited reporting enables candidates to plan their overseas applications more efficiently and provides the opportunity for test retakes to improve scores. Notably, seven out of 10 individuals who retake the GRE achieve the same or better scores in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. Additionally, the GRE allows students who take the test multiple times the flexibility to submit either all of their scores to schools or only their best scores.
With its section-level adaptability, lack of negative marking, and five-year validity of test scores, the GRE presents students with a unique chance to enhance their prospects for admission to leading international universities across various graduate programs.
For those preparing for the GRE, here are some practical tips to optimize your performance on test day:
-
Comprehend the GRE format and devise a study plan: Understand the test’s main sections—Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Take a practice test to identify strengths and weaknesses, then create a study plan focusing on areas that need improvement.
