Posted on Thursday, March 7, 2024 by Polk Newsroom

Alex Dyer, a soon-to-be Ivy League graduate, had his worldview transformed during a study abroad experience in Europe while studying at Polk State College. This encounter inspired him to become more actively engaged in societal issues.

Having been awarded the prestigious Marshall Scholarship, funded by the British government to support outstanding American students, Dyer is set to embark on a new academic journey. Upon completing his studies at Harvard, he will pursue a two-year master’s program at Cambridge University in England, focusing on housing and homelessness research.

Reflecting on his upcoming academic endeavor, Dyer expressed, “This scholarship offers a unique opportunity to delve deeper into topics of personal interest. The study abroad program at Polk State laid the foundation for this incredible achievement, and I am still reaping the benefits.”

In 2019, at the age of 22, Dyer participated in a special history class, AMH2930 Special Topics History, at Polk State, traveling to France and the United Kingdom. This educational trip coincided with the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a significant event marking the Allied Forces’ invasion of Normandy in June 1944.

Recalling his experience, Dyer emphasized, “Witnessing the interconnectedness of nations firsthand was truly enlightening. Despite the historical conflicts, such as World War II, the collaboration and impact of different countries were evident.”

Polk State College has a long-standing tradition of offering study abroad opportunities in various global destinations like London, Paris, Dublin, Athens, and Madrid. These programs aim to equip students with essential life skills, foster cultural awareness, and encourage critical thinking from a global perspective.

Dyer credits his study abroad experience for broadening his worldview and inspiring his philanthropic endeavors. He has collaborated with the nonprofit organization Engineers Without Borders International to facilitate access to clean drinking water in Kenyan communities.

Through his involvement, Dyer contributed to the installation of two wells serving nearly 2,500 residents. By working closely with local leaders, the organization strategically addressed the community’s water needs, resulting in a tangible improvement in public health.

Expressing his satisfaction with the project, Dyer shared, “Engaging with the community and witnessing the positive impact of our efforts is truly fulfilling. It fosters a sense of belonging and mutual understanding.”

Having visited the Kenyan community for two consecutive summers, Dyer has observed a decline in water-related skin diseases since the implementation of the wells. The community’s next objective is to ensure that all members have access to clean water within a 30-minute radius by establishing additional water kiosks.

As a senior at Harvard University, ranked as the No. 3 university in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report, Dyer is on track to graduate in May with a degree in electrical engineering. His academic pursuits will then lead him to Cambridge University in England, where he plans to continue his advocacy efforts while furthering his studies.

Reflecting on his academic journey, Dyer acknowledged the pivotal role of his educational experiences, particularly the study abroad program at Polk State, in shaping his aspirations. He highlighted the supportive environment at Harvard, mentioning individuals like Chris Lombardo, who have been instrumental in his personal and professional development.

Looking ahead, Polk State students in 2024 can anticipate study abroad opportunities in Japan, France, and Costa Rica. For more details on upcoming programs and dual enrollment options at Polk State, visit the official website.
