Nominations are now being accepted for the David Karem Award for Excellence in Education Policy by the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) in Frankfort, Kentucky. This prestigious award, named after former board chairman David Karem, aims to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to enhancing Kentucky’s public education system at the state level.
The award criteria include:
- Demonstrated leadership in developing, passing, or implementing policies that have led to expanded educational opportunities for students.
- Improvement of educational, postsecondary, or workforce outcomes for students.
- Enhancement of the capacity of teachers or school personnel to effectively address the academic, social, or emotional needs of Kentucky students.
David Karem, who served on the KBE from 2009 to 2016 and again from December 2019 to April 2020, played a pivotal role in education policy during his tenure. Notably, he was instrumental in the passage of the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) and spearheaded initiatives for the 4% school tax levy by school districts.
Nominations for this award can be submitted online until March 15, with the presentation ceremony scheduled to take place at KBE’s June meeting.
