### Essential Items for Studying Overseas: Top 8 Packing Must-Haves

This article was authored by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

One of the most enriching experiences in my life was studying abroad. However, the process of packing was undeniably one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects. During my six-week study program in Valencia, Spain, I honed the skill of efficient packing. If you are preparing for a study abroad adventure, fret not about creating the perfect packing list. Here are my top eight essential items to pack for your study abroad journey.

  1. Travel Backpack

A travel backpack is indispensable, especially if you intend to embark on short weekend getaways during your time abroad. It eliminates the hassle of lugging around a bulky suitcase or duffel bag. Opt for a travel backpack equipped with multiple compartments and a dedicated laptop sleeve, ideal for carrying any coursework on the go.

  1. Mini First Aid Kit

Prioritize preparedness by including a mini first aid kit in your packing list. Different countries may have varying regulations for over-the-counter medications, so it’s wise to pack essentials like Ibuprofen, throat lozenges, Band-Aids, antacids, and any prescribed medications you may require during your time abroad.

  1. Fanny Pack

While some may view it as a fashion accessory, a fanny pack serves a crucial purpose while studying abroad, especially in areas prone to pickpocketing. This compact bag allows you to securely store valuables such as your wallet, phone, portable charger, and snacks, ensuring they are within reach at all times.

  1. Passport (and a Copy)

The golden rule of international travel—never forget your passport! Additionally, carry a copy of your passport to mitigate the stress of misplacing the original document. In the unfortunate event of passport loss, having a copy can expedite the replacement process.

  1. Packing Cubes

Stay organized on the go with packing cubes, a game-changer for meticulous packers. These cubes facilitate efficient sorting and compactly store your clothing, making unpacking a breeze upon reaching your destination.

  1. Reusable Water Bottle

A trusty companion for staying hydrated on the move, a reusable water bottle is a must-have accessory. Whether exploring the city, attending classes, or relaxing in your accommodation, a water bottle ensures you stay refreshed throughout your adventures.

  1. Universal Adapter and Portable Charger

Navigating varied outlet types and voltage standards in different countries is simplified with a universal adapter. Pair it with a portable charger to keep your devices powered up, especially crucial for accessing essential tools like Google Maps while exploring unfamiliar territories.

  1. Sentimental Item

Combat feelings of homesickness by packing a memento that reminds you of home. Whether it’s a cherished childhood toy, photographs of loved ones, or a sentimental trinket, having a piece of home with you can offer comfort during moments of nostalgia.

As you gear up for your upcoming study abroad escapade, remember these essential packing tips to streamline your preparations. Happy packing!
