### Spring Break Exploration: London Adventures for First-Generation Murray State Students

A new opportunity has emerged for first-generation students at Murray State University to enrich their educational journey beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.

Recognized for their typically high expenses, study abroad programs have often been financially out of reach for many students. In response to this challenge, Jennifer Smith, the assistant director of the Center for Student Engagement and Success, has introduced a novel concept—a cost-effective study abroad option tailored specifically for first-generation students. These students, who represent the first in their families to pursue a four-year degree, often face unique financial constraints.

Collaborating with a dedicated team of faculty and staff members, Smith is orchestrating a trip to London during the upcoming spring break, accommodating a cohort of 15 students. Nevaeh Jackson, a freshman majoring in public and community health, is among the participants selected for this distinctive opportunity. Jackson emphasized the significance of this initiative for students who would otherwise be unable to partake in conventional study abroad programs, highlighting the transformative impact such experiences can have on academic and professional growth.

Jackson underscored that studying abroad transcends mere leisurely travel—it fosters crucial skills essential for career development, such as adaptability, exposure to diverse academic environments, and cross-cultural competence. She stressed that these competencies are pivotal for success in various professional fields, making affordable study abroad programs a pivotal factor in breaking down barriers to personal and career advancement.

Smith’s motivation for spearheading this program stemmed from an article shedding light on the underrepresentation of first-generation students in study abroad initiatives. Inspired to bridge this gap, Smith delved into research on strategies employed by other institutions to promote inclusivity in education abroad. She emphasized that such experiences are invaluable for all students, with the disparity in participation among first-gen students primarily attributed to financial constraints, familial responsibilities, and a lack of awareness about study abroad opportunities.

The overarching goal of the study abroad program is to enrich academic learning by integrating real-world experiences with classroom knowledge. Smith expressed her aspiration for the London trip to ignite students’ curiosity, instill a sense of adventure, nurture self-confidence, and cultivate networking skills crucial for lifelong success.

Jackson shared her optimism about the forthcoming experience, expressing anticipation for the broader perspectives and opportunities it may unveil. Coming from a small town, Jackson acknowledged the program’s potential to expand her horizons, motivate her academic endeavors, and empower her to effect positive change in the world.

Scheduled to commence on March 14, the program will feature visits to iconic landmarks such as Stonehenge, Bath, a Warner Bros. Studios tour, and theatrical performances. Thanks to a grant secured by Steven Guns, students are only required to contribute $600 towards the trip expenses, making it an accessible opportunity for many.

Steven Guns, the director of education abroad and program director for London spring break 2024, clarified that the funding for the program was sourced from the Kentucky Innovative Scholarship, a collaborative initiative of the Council of Post Secondary Education and Higher Education Assistance Authority. While primarily aimed at supporting displaced students, a portion of the scholarship was allocated to promote international exchange opportunities.

Reflecting on her initial apprehensions, Jackson acknowledged personal growth through overcoming fears and embracing new challenges. She encouraged fellow students to seize similar opportunities for personal and academic enrichment.

Smith emphasized the program’s objective of fostering a cohesive student community and enhancing the overall college experience, with a keen eye on securing grants to sustain and expand such initiatives in the future.
