Student takeaways on communal learning

COME the nearing end of a schoolyear or term, academic officials would be busy in having teacher performance evaluation conducted. Usually, higher education institutions maintain an office that regularly conducts student evaluations of instructors’ teaching performance. In some institutions, this office shares the same office as the Guidance and Counselling Department. In others, either the vice president for the Academic Affairs office or individual college deans conduct an evaluation of their respective faculty members using an evaluation instrument common to all colleges. However, if there is a need for an additional evaluation statement arising from the nature of a subject, such as teacher mentorship during OJT (which is seldom required in the liberal arts), the college may add relevant items to the student evaluation. The frequency and nature of faculty evaluation would change depending on the institution’s academic ranking system or that which prepares requirements for accreditation.
