EL PASO, Texas () — Children at Risk, a nonprofit organization dedicated to education advocacy, has been evaluating Texas public schools for almost twenty years. Their rankings aim to provide valuable insights for parents, educators, and the community to assess the performance of local schools and stimulate discussions about education.
The analysis for the 2022-2023 academic year focuses on 218 public schools in the El Paso area. This includes 127 elementary schools, 55 middle schools, and 36 high schools, each assessed based on different criteria:
- Student Achievement: Evaluates student performance on state standardized tests (STAAR).
- Campus Performance: Assesses how a school’s test scores compare to those of schools with similar poverty levels.
- Student Growth: Measures students’ progress on STAAR tests throughout the school year.
- College Readiness (High Schools Only): Considers the graduation rate and participation in college readiness activities among high school students.
The Gold Ribbon School category recognizes high-performing schools with high poverty rates, specifically traditional neighborhood campuses. Magnet schools and charter schools are not included in this category. High-poverty schools are defined as those where over 75% of students are economically disadvantaged. Schools that receive an A or B rating from Children at Risk are considered high-performing in high-poverty areas.
The rankings for each school are determined by averaging their performance across the mentioned criteria for the 2022-2023 school year.
