### Exploring the Present and Future of College Admissions: A Graduate School Symposium

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Office of Graduate Educational Equity Programs at The Graduate School is organizing a day of discussion for Penn State community members involved in or interested in the graduate admissions process. The event, titled “Holistic Admissions Post-SCOTUS #2024,” will focus on holistic admissions.

Scheduled for March 28 at President’s Hall 1 in the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center, the event will address the current and future landscape of admissions in higher education post the Supreme Court’s decision to eliminate affirmative action in June 2023. The event is free to attend, and lunch will be provided. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the event commencing at 9 a.m. and concluding at 3 p.m.

The workshop will explore important themes such as legal implications, holistic admissions strategies, and promoting inclusive excellence in today’s higher education challenges. Holistic admissions, as an alternative to affirmative action, evaluates each applicant’s profile comprehensively, considering various factors rather than focusing solely on one aspect. This approach respects applicants’ diverse experiences while also incorporating traditional metrics like grades and test scores in the decision-making process.

The event will feature four distinguished speakers sharing insights from universities across the United States:

  • Tamla Lewis, associate general counsel and athletics integrity officer at Penn State
  • Ethriam Brammer, assistant dean at the Horace H Rackham School of Graduate Studies, University of Michigan
  • Anne K. Mapp, Edwin Vedejs collegiate professor of chemistry at the University of Michigan
  • Damon L. Williams, associate vice president of institutional diversity at the University of Kentucky

Registration for the event is open until Monday, March 25, for those interested in participating.
