Known for its prominence as an IT hub, Ireland attracts Indian students to programs in Computer Science, Data Science, STEM subjects, as well as popular fields like business and management, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, marketing, and nursing.

Furthermore, there is a growing interest in innovative programs such as sustainability, environmental sciences, and aeronautical studies.

In an exclusive interview, Ambassador Kevin Kelly, Ireland’s Ambassador to India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, underscores Ireland as an attractive destination for international students and underscores the importance of the virtual education fair on February 8.

What is the procedure for obtaining a student visa in Ireland like?

While the student visa application process in Ireland is typically manageable, applicants must diligently follow the guidelines provided by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) and the Irish embassy or consulate in their home country.

Prospective students are advised to initiate the application process well in advance of their intended start date to accommodate any possible delays.

What are the specifics regarding the post-study work visa in Ireland?

Ireland offers a post-study work visa program, commonly referred to as the Stay Back Option or the Third Level Graduate Scheme. This initiative allows non-European Economic Area (EEA) students who have completed their degree at a recognized Irish higher education institution to extend their stay in Ireland and work for a specified period after graduation.

Eligibility for the post-study work visa is contingent upon the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree at a recognized institution.

The duration of the visa varies depending on the level of the completed qualification, with bachelor’s degree graduates eligible for a 12-month stay, while master’s or doctoral degree graduates can stay for 24 months.

During this period, graduates are free to seek employment in any field, without the requirement for the job to be related to their field of study.

Applying for the post-study work visa entails submitting relevant documents, including proof of degree completion, within a specified timeframe after completing studies. Prospective students are advised to stay informed about any changes in immigration policies that may affect the conditions and requirements of the post-study work visa.

What is the cost of living like in Ireland for students?

The cost of living for students in Ireland varies depending on factors such as accommodation, lifestyle, and location. On average, monthly expenses include accommodation (€300-€1,000+), food (€200-€300), transportation (€50-€100), utilities (€50-€100), and miscellaneous expenses (€50-€100).

These figures are general estimates, and actual expenses may vary. While living costs in cities like Dublin can be high, other regions in Ireland may offer more affordable options. Additionally, part-time work opportunities for students and the post-study work visa provision can assist in managing expenses. It is crucial for students to plan and budget effectively.

Securing scholarships in Ireland can be competitive, but there are numerous opportunities available for international students seeking to pursue their studies in the country:

Institution Scholarships: Many Irish universities and colleges offer scholarships tailored for international students based on merit. These scholarships cater to individuals across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Additionally, research scholarships are available based on financial need.

To pursue these scholarships, it is advisable to explore the websites of Irish higher education institutions directly. These platforms typically furnish detailed information on available scholarships, eligibility criteria, and application procedures. Furthermore, seeking guidance from academic advisors and faculty members in the chosen field of study can provide valuable insights into potential research funding opportunities for Ph.D. candidates.

Government Scholarship: The Irish government and various agencies extend scholarships to international students across different academic levels and disciplines. These scholarships are generally merit-based and may cover partial or full tuition fees, living expenses, and other associated costs.

The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship supports high-caliber international students seeking to study at the master’s or Ph.D. level in Ireland. The program is funded by the Government of Ireland in collaboration with Irish higher education institutions and managed by the Higher Education Authority. Under this initiative, 60 scholarships are awarded annually for one year of full-time study.

How feasible is it to transition from a student visa to a work visa and eventually to citizenship in Ireland?

Under the Third Level Graduate Permit Scheme, the Irish Government allows non-European Union (EU) graduates to stay in Ireland for up to 2 years post-graduation and work legally for 20-40 hours per week while pursuing further studies.

After the initial 24 months, graduates can apply for a Green Card or Work Permit Scheme. Graduates can also benefit from the Critical Skills Occupation List, which identifies occupations where there is a shortage of qualifications, experience, or skills essential for the effective functioning of the Irish economy.

How will the one-day virtual fair benefit students?

The one-day virtual fair provides students the opportunity to explore courses, interact with academics, gather information on scholarships, and directly engage with representatives.

The aim is to offer a comprehensive platform for students to make well-informed decisions, gaining insights into academic programs, admission procedures, and global opportunities.
