### Oklahoma’s Campus Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Revamp

How Legislators Can Put an End to Divisive Programs and Safeguard Students’ First Amendment Rights

Understanding Campus DEI

Campus DEI, which stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, is a concept that, unfortunately, often promotes a divisive agenda and advocates for policies that exclude certain races. These programs draw inspiration from Critical Race Theory (CRT), aiming to reshape American society by moving away from a color-blind system based on merit towards an equality of outcomes, even if it means resorting to reverse discrimination.

Diversity Programs

Diversity initiatives frequently involve granting preferential treatment to specific groups based on their skin color. Many DEI offices maintain bias response teams to monitor student speech and conduct mandatory training sessions that encourage individuals to assess people and society primarily through the lens of race.

Equity Measures

The term “equity” in this context actually refers to achieving equal outcomes, often by lowering academic standards and showing bias against high-achieving groups. The Supreme Court has ruled against the use of race preferences in admissions when it leads to discrimination or stereotyping based on skin color.

Inclusivity Efforts

“Inclusion” within DEI programs sometimes translates to creating exclusive spaces and initiatives for historically disadvantaged groups, further deepening racial divides. Today, many campuses host racially segregated student organizations, areas, scholarships, and events.

Impact of DEI on Campus Life

  • Fear Among Educators: Teachers may avoid controversial topics due to concerns that any misstep in language could result in offending students, triggering investigations from administrators, or even facing academic repercussions.
  • Student Hesitation in Debates: Students may self-censor in class to align with prevailing campus ideologies, fearing dissent could lead to lower grades, reporting to bias response teams, or becoming targets of online backlash.
  • Diminished Campus Environment: Research indicates that sprawling DEI initiatives can reduce satisfaction levels among both students and faculty regarding inclusivity and their sense of belonging on campus.
  • Lowered Academic Standards: DEI’s emphasis on racial equity may pressure educators to pass students with inadequate performance, ultimately compromising the rigor of academic courses and hindering student learning.

AFPI’s Review of State Universities in Oklahoma

AFPI’s examination revealed the pervasive influence of DEI in various aspects of state universities in Oklahoma, including the core curriculum, bias incident reporting systems, faculty recruitment, race-exclusive clubs, student admissions, administrative offices, staff training, and course syllabi requirements.

AFPI’s latest research report, “Reversing the Woke Takeover of Higher Education: Strategies to Dismantle Campus DEI,” outlines seven recommendations for policymakers and governors to curb DEI initiatives, uphold free inquiry, and enhance viewpoint diversity within state universities.

Recommendation Highlights

  1. Transparency: State leaders can request information on DEI programs, personnel, and expenses to gauge the extent of DEI influence and guide potential legislative actions.
  2. Academic Freedom: Lawmakers can defend academic freedom while opposing the misuse of universities to advance CRT’s radical agendas.
  3. Targeted Legislation: Legislators should aim to halt divisive practices like DEI statements in hiring, biased training sessions, and discriminatory reporting systems.
  4. Commitment to Expression: Universities should commit to free expression and viewpoint neutrality in their mission statements and policies.
  5. Governance Expertise: Governors should appoint board members well-versed in higher education dynamics to lead effectively.
  6. Free Speech Protection: States can introduce laws to safeguard free speech rights and encourage diverse viewpoints on campuses.
  7. Race-Neutral Support: Public leaders can advocate for race-neutral programs that genuinely aid student success regardless of demographics.
