**Opportunity for Chaiken Scholar to Study in South Korea**

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Nije’e Patton-Johns, a third-year Chaiken Scholar majoring in psychology with double minors in Korean language and human development and family studies, is a recipient of the prestigious scholarship program that offers up to $5,000 for undergraduates to pursue studies overseas.

Hailing from Sewell, New Jersey, Patton-Johns emphasized the significance of this scholarship and the effort she invested in securing it. She first discovered the scholarship opportunity through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) study abroad program.

Initially hesitant due to its perceived prestige, Patton-Johns eventually decided to apply after conducting thorough research. Reflecting on the challenging essay process amidst her other academic commitments, she shared, “The essay process was difficult because I was trying to perfect them on top of all my other work.”

Seeking assistance, Patton-Johns visited the Writing Center for guidance from a tutor. However, what stood out most for her was the moment she learned about being selected as a scholarship recipient. Recalling the exciting revelation, she said, “I was having a long day, so I went to McDonald’s for a pick-me-up. On the bus ride back home, I got an email from the Gilman Scholarship Program. It said I received the scholarship. I was freaking out on the bus because I was so proud of myself.”

Utilizing the scholarship, Patton-Johns embarked on a study abroad journey to South Korea in late February. During her time abroad, she intends to continue her psychology studies and hone her Korean language skills with the goal of achieving fluency.

Her enthusiasm lies in immersing herself in Korean culture, encompassing values, customs, and the culinary landscape. She expressed her eagerness to broaden her horizons through this international experience.

Expressing her lifelong passion for Korean language and culture, Patton-Johns revealed that she has been self-teaching Korean since the age of 12, initially inspired by K-dramas and K-pop. Her exposure to the language and interactions with Korean culture motivated her to pursue formal education in Korean studies.

Post-graduation, Patton-Johns aspires to leverage her academic background to pursue a career in psychology, potentially aiming to become a psychologist.
