### Expanding Horizons: UI’s Study Abroad Program Broadening Your Worldview

Pursuing academic, travel, and career goals while working towards a degree and immersing oneself in diverse cultural experiences is not an insurmountable challenge. It may initially seem overwhelming to navigate the process of studying abroad, but Olivia Adams, a senior at the University of Idaho and a work-study employee for the International Programs Office (IPO), offers valuable insights on initiating this transformative journey.

Studying abroad presents a unique opportunity, particularly for college students, as it offers the chance to explore the world with financial support while earning transferable credits. These programs go beyond traditional academics, providing avenues for internships, community engagement, and service learning to enrich the overall experience.

According to Adams, only 10 percent of students engage in studying abroad, yet over 60 percent of employers emphasize the significance of international exposure in recruitment. Candidates with such experience often assume greater professional roles within organizations.

The IPO maintains partnerships with more than 300 universities spanning 45 countries, enabling students to select destinations aligned with their personal, academic, and career aspirations. Regardless of their field of study or language proficiency, students can fully engage in these programs. While language immersion is encouraged, many courses are conducted in English, making the transition smoother for participants.

To alleviate the impact of cultural differences, various program types are available, including partner exchange (with students worldwide), study abroad (comprehensive onsite support), and faculty-led initiatives (guided by professors and of shorter duration).

Financial concerns often deter students from considering study abroad opportunities. However, Adams reassures prospective participants that financial aid options are plentiful, emphasizing that scholarships and aid packages can significantly reduce the overall cost of the experience.

As an advocate for international education and a student of International Studies and Political Science with a minor in Spanish, Adams draws from her own semester in Spain in Spring 2023 to inspire others to pursue similar opportunities. Her commitment extends to leading informational sessions at the IPO, guiding students through the initial steps towards realizing their study abroad ambitions.

These informative sessions, held at the IPO adjacent to the LLC offices, take place on Mondays at 3:30 p.m., Tuesdays at 2 p.m., and Fridays at 1:30 p.m. Adams underscores the importance of international exposure in today’s globalized world, emphasizing its role in fostering cross-cultural understanding and personal growth.
