Nearly half of the students applying for international courses and those in need of financial support for their studies are women, according to data.

An increasing number of Indian women are showing interest in pursuing higher education abroad in countries like the US, UK, Europe, and Australia. They are taking advantage of a growing array of specialized scholarships and funding opportunities, as indicated by data from loan providers and education consultants.

The data reveals that nearly half of the students applying for overseas courses and those seeking financial assistance to support their studies are women. These women are not only from major cities but also from smaller towns, with education consultants noting a significant increase in female applicants from 20-30% in FY21 to 40-45% in FY24. Financial institutions have also observed a rise in female aspirants seeking education loans, with numbers climbing from 25-30% in FY21 to 35-45% in FY24.

Akshay Chaturvedi, the founder and CEO of Leverage.biz, the parent company of Fly.finance, stated, “In the September 2022 intake, approximately 31% of loan applicants were female. This percentage rose to a remarkable 40% in the recent September 2023 intake, and we anticipate further growth in female applicants this year.”

Amit Gainda, MD, and CEO of Avanse Financial Services, mentioned, “During FY21, over 30% of students funded by Avanse were women. This figure increased to more than 33% in FY22 and has remained consistent in the subsequent financial year. In the current fiscal year (FY24), 34-36% of students funded are female aspirants.”

The data also shows that nearly 45% of students funded from non-metro cities were women, up from 34% in FY21.

Rohan Ganeriwala, co-founder of study abroad consultant Collegify, shared with Economic Times, “In recent years, we have witnessed a notable shift in study abroad demographics, particularly among women in the Collegify network. Historically, female applicants accounted for 30-35% of the total. However, in the past two to three years, this proportion has increased to 40-45%.”

Rohan Ganeriwala further explained, “Societal movements towards gender equality and empowerment have motivated more women to pursue enriching experiences abroad.”
