The establishment of a scholarship at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) in Ithaca, New York, pays tribute to a highly esteemed mentor. Named after Stephen J. Ettinger, D.V.M. 1964, a distinguished veterinarian renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to specialty medicine, the scholarship was initiated by former students who were profoundly influenced by his mentorship and guidance.

Julio López, DVM, an alumnus from the Class of 2008 at CVM, spearheaded the creation of the scholarship. López, whose career path was significantly shaped by Ettinger’s mentorship, expressed deep gratitude towards him, describing him as not only a mentor but also a father figure. The scholarship, known as the Stephen J. Ettinger 1962, D.V.M. 1964 Scholarship, stands as a testament to the enduring impact of Ettinger’s mentorship on his students.

Ettinger, a Cornell University graduate from the class of 1962, played a pivotal role in advancing the field of veterinary medicine by co-founding the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and holding the prestigious position of president of cardiology within the organization during the 1970s. His significant contributions were recognized in 2021 when he received the inaugural ACVIM Specialty Lifetime Achievement Award.

During the formative years of the ACVIM, Ettinger was instrumental in promoting specialization in veterinary medicine through educational lectures and advocacy efforts. His dedication and leadership paved the way for the growth of veterinary specialties, catalyzing transformative changes within the industry.

Ettinger’s influence extends beyond his professional achievements; his active involvement at Cornell University, including serving on the Board of Trustees and various councils, underscores his commitment to advancing veterinary education and practice. His exceptional service was acknowledged in 2010 with the prestigious Daniel Elmer Salmon Award for Distinguished Alumni Service.

Apart from his academic and organizational contributions, Ettinger’s legacy is also evident in his role as a mentor to numerous veterinary students, such as Fred Brewer, DVM, Class of 2009, and Etienne Côté, DVM, Class of 1993. These alumni, along with López, collaborated to establish the scholarship program as a tribute to Ettinger’s enduring impact on their lives and careers.

The scholarship established in Ettinger’s honor has already made a meaningful difference in supporting students in need of financial assistance. By leveraging his network and influence, Ettinger has mobilized former clients to contribute to scholarship funds, including the Barbara Benz Memorial Scholarship, furthering the legacy of giving back to the veterinary community.

In reflecting on the importance of supporting aspiring veterinary professionals, Ettinger emphasized the significance of providing financial aid to deserving students, recognizing the pivotal role it plays in shaping the future of the profession. His unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of veterinarians underscores his dedication to fostering excellence in veterinary education and practice.
