### Integrating Family Heritage into Music Education: A BYU Student’s Journey

Oscar Safsten is a music education major from Washington who is infusing his Swedish heritage into his studies at BYU.

Half-Swedish Safsten, named after his great-grandfather who migrated to the U.S. in 1923, recently completed a transformative mini study abroad experience in Sweden. During this trip, he delved into choral music and conducting while also reconnecting with distant relatives and exploring his ancestral roots.

Safsten cherishes the tale of his great-grandfather’s journey to Washington state, a narrative cherished by his family.

His deep-rooted affection for his Swedish background stems from his upbringing in Washington, where he enjoyed traditional Swedish cuisine and heard captivating family stories.

Having visited Sweden previously as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Safsten developed a proficiency in the Swedish language.

Safsten’s familial ties to Sweden were further strengthened during his study abroad stint in 2023, where he immersed himself in the country’s choral music scene. This experience included meeting his great-grandfather’s nephew, Ulf Säfsten, who guided him through significant family landmarks.

One poignant moment for Safsten was signing his name next to his great-grandfather’s signature in a log barn, symbolizing a century-spanning connection.

During his time in Sweden, Safsten not only honed his musical skills but also deepened his appreciation for family bonds.

Safsten’s musical journey continued as he conducted the Lund University Choir, a significant milestone in his musical career.

His passion for music also led him to discover a familial connection at BYU with Marie Hansen, a second cousin who shares his love for music and choral conducting.

As Safsten continues his music education at BYU, he aspires to become a high school choir teacher, with plans for another enriching trip to Sweden in the near future, accompanied by his sister.
