### Compelling Reasons to Consider Studying Overseas

This article is authored by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Upon eagerly checking my email post FSU application, I was taken aback to find out that my acceptance decision had been deferred. The news left me feeling extremely anxious, to say the least. Having idealized FSU as my desired college destination for a significant period, I was unsure about my chances of acceptance. Following several agonizing weeks of anticipation, I was eventually admitted to FSU through the Seminole Pathways Program. Here are five compelling reasons why you should consider studying abroad, shared by someone who embarked on their first semester at FSU Florence.

  1. Expand Your Social Circle

One of my primary concerns was forming new friendships, a fear that I later realized was more widespread than I had initially thought. Despite not knowing anyone at the beginning of the program, I had already established new connections by the end of the first day. It dawned on me that we were all in the same situation—immersed in a new city and culture, seeking lasting bonds with fellow participants.

The friendships I forged during those initial days have endured, and I am confident that they will stand the test of time. We journeyed together, laughed together, learned together, and resided together, creating memories that I cherish.

  1. Immerse Yourself in Diverse Cultures and Locations

Studying abroad opens up a world of exploration. During my time in the enchanting city of Florence, Italy, I had the opportunity to travel extensively. I visited various cities and towns across Italy, including Venice, Milan, and Cinque Terre, among others. Additionally, I ventured to neighboring countries such as Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Exploring these new destinations with newfound friends was an invaluable experience. It allowed me to immerse myself in different cultures, savor new cuisines, and witness breathtaking sights. Each new place brought unique experiences, like trying duck in Versailles, France, or indulging in a cannoli for the first time in Venice.

  1. Embrace the Unfamiliar

Opting to study abroad is a significant decision. While many choose the community college route, my parents encouraged me to pursue this opportunity, and I am grateful for their guidance. Stepping out of my comfort zone was a necessity. Initially unfamiliar with the Italian language and the city of Florence, I quickly adapted, picking up basic Italian phrases, forming friendships, and delving into the city’s rich tapestry.

  1. Discover Your True Self

Maintaining a journal during my time abroad was invaluable. I found solace in documenting my daily experiences, weekend escapades, and reflections on solo excursions. These moments of solitude allowed me to unearth a newfound appreciation for personal time. Exploring a new city or country alone can be a transformative experience, offering moments of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle. I wholeheartedly recommend it to all.

  1. Create Everlasting Memories

Studying abroad is a transformative journey that leaves an indelible mark. The sights I beheld, the culinary delights I savored, the captured moments, and the enduring memories are etched in my heart. From attending FSU Florence soccer matches with friends to exploring museums and landmarks with classmates, each experience holds a special place in my heart. I urge anyone with even a hint of interest to consider studying abroad—it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

While the conventional path for many might be community college, an alternative route presented itself: commencing my academic journey at FSU abroad. Despite initial hesitations, the unwavering support of my parents led me to seize this opportunity. Now, having undergone this transformative experience, I cannot envision my first semester at FSU Florence unfolding any other way.
